Is the MG Comet EV right for you?

Best for

  • Second or city-only car for solo commuters or couples making short trips within town, where the 230 km ARAI-claimed range (no independently tested real-world figure yet) comfortably covers the day
  • Buyers who fight for parking daily - the 4.2 m turning radius and compact two-door footprint are built for narrow lanes and tight city spots
  • First-time EV buyers chasing the lowest entry price in MG's EV lineup, especially those open to the BaaS (Battery as a Service) route that brings the sticker down to around Rs 4.99 lakh
  • Anyone who can charge overnight at home or society - about 7 hours on the standard 3.3kW AC point, or roughly 3.5 hours on the FC variants' 7.4kW charger - and never needs to charge away from home

Think twice if

  • Highway or intercity travelers - there is no DC fast charging on any of the five variants, only Type 2 AC, so long trips mean long waits
  • Families or anyone needing rear-seat access and boot space - the two-door layout and small boot are genuine practicality trade-offs, not styling choices
  • Buyers wanting quick acceleration or overtaking confidence - the 31 kW (42 PS) motor is tuned for city crawl, not open-road performance
  • Anyone assuming the lowest advertised price is the final price - the ~Rs 4.99 lakh BaaS figure excludes the ongoing per-km battery rental, which adds up over time

Charging and living with it

Charging: 0-100% in ~7h on 3.3kW AC; no DC fast charging (Type 2 AC only). Most owners charge overnight at home; plan public or workplace charging for longer trips. Living with the Comet EV means planning entirely around AC charging: an overnight top-up at home or society (about 7 hours on the standard charger, or roughly 3.5 hours on FC variants with a 7.4kW point). With no DC fast charging anywhere in the lineup, there is no quick top-up option away from home - charging happens where you park, not where you travel.

5-year cost of ownership

Based on 40 km/day, the MG Comet EV Executive costs about ₹1,600/month to run versus ₹8,400/month for a comparable petrol car, a saving of ₹82,733/year at July 2026 prices.

Strengths

  • Lowest entry price of any MG EV (from ~4.99 lakh under BaaS)
  • Tiny 4.2 m turning radius and compact footprint ideal for city parking
  • 10.25-inch floating touchscreen and connected features on higher trims
  • Fast Charge (FC) variants add a 7.4 kW AC charger for ~3.5h top-ups

Watch-outs

  • No DC fast charging at all; AC-only limits long trips
  • 230 km ARAI range and 42 PS motor are strictly city-grade
  • Two-door layout and small boot restrict practicality
  • BaaS adds a per-km battery rental on top of the low sticker price

FAQ

What is the real-world range of the MG Comet EV?

MG's own claim is 230 km under ARAI test conditions on the 17.4 kWh battery. EVz has not independently tested a real-world range for the Comet, so treat 230 km as a lab ceiling rather than a daily-use promise - expect noticeably less once you factor in AC, traffic and short-trip driving.

Can the MG Comet EV be fast-charged?

No variant supports DC fast charging - all five use Type 2 AC only. The Executive, Excite and Exclusive trims charge 0-100% in about 7 hours on a 3.3kW AC point. The two FC (Fast Charge) variants, Excite FC and Exclusive FC, use a 7.4kW AC charger to bring that down to roughly 3.5 hours.

Which Comet EV variant should I buy?

If you have access to a 7.4kW AC point at home or your society, the Excite FC at Rs 9,16,800 is the practical middle option - it adds faster AC charging without paying for the top Exclusive trim. If you only ever charge overnight regardless of speed, the base Executive at Rs 7,79,800 gives you the same 230 km ARAI range and 17.4 kWh battery for less.

Is the MG Comet EV cheaper under the BaaS scheme?

Yes. MG's Battery as a Service option separates out the battery cost and brings the entry price down to around Rs 4.99 lakh, but you then pay a per-km rental for using the battery on top of that. Work out your expected monthly running before assuming BaaS is the cheaper path over ownership.

How does the Comet EV stack up on value against other EVs?

Its Rs 7,79,800 to Rs 10,06,800 ex-showroom range undercuts most other EV hatchbacks in India, and the 4.2 m turning radius plus a 10.25-inch touchscreen on higher trims are real city-use advantages. The trade-off is that you give up DC fast charging, rear doors and any real highway range to get that price - it is built specifically as a city runabout, not an all-purpose car.
