The used-EV buying checklist

Battery & range (the deal decider)

The battery is most of the vehicle's value and the hardest part to verify. Spend most of your time here.

• Do a real range test: note charge % and the trip meter, ride or drive a meaningful distance, and extrapolate The only battery check you can always run yourself. Compare what you measure against the model's tested real-world figure (not the brochure claim) to judge how much capacity the pack has lost. Red flag: A seller who will not allow a proper test ride, or measured range dramatically below the model's known real-world figure for its age.
• Ask for a battery health (SoH) readout from the brand app, dealer diagnostic or service centre State of health is the single most important number on a used EV. Some brands expose it in the owner app or can pull it at a service centre; an official readout beats any verbal claim. Red flag: No readout available anywhere and the seller discourages a service-centre visit. Budget as if the pack is materially degraded.
• Charge it during the inspection: watch it reach a high charge % and note any errors or unusual heat A pack or BMS problem often shows up while charging, not while driving: error messages, a charge that stalls short of full, or a pack that gets unusually hot. Red flag: The vehicle arrives fully charged and the seller resists plugging it in while you watch.
• Confirm in writing whether the battery warranty survives the ownership transfer Battery warranties are years long on paper, but some brands make them first-owner-only or void them on transfer, and the warranty is the backstop for the most expensive component. Red flag: A 'lifetime' warranty that turns out to be first-owner-only, or no documented warranty status at all.
• Ask how it was charged and used: daily DC fast charging, always-100%, or long idle periods Charging habits shape degradation. A pack that lived on gentle AC charging in the middle of its charge window has usually aged better than one fast-charged daily. Red flag: A commercial-use history (delivery or fleet duty) sold as private use; check the odometer against the story.

The vehicle around the battery

• Get the full service history at an authorised centre, with any battery or motor work highlighted EVs need less routine service than petrol vehicles, so gaps matter less, but any pack, motor or controller repair is a major event you need to know about. Red flag: A pack or controller replacement that nobody mentions until you find it in the records.
• Check software version, pending updates and whether any recall applies to this exact vehicle On an EV, range, charging behaviour and even safety fixes ship as software. An out-of-date vehicle may be missing fixes; an open recall is the seller's problem to close, not yours. Red flag: An open recall the seller cannot show as completed.
• Confirm the portable charger, both keys, and any paid accessories are included and working A replacement portable charger is a real cost, and its absence sometimes signals the vehicle led a harder life (public-charging-only or fleet use). Red flag: Missing charger with a vague explanation.
• Inspect tyres and brakes: EVs are heavy and torquey, and regen hides brake condition Instant torque wears tyres faster than a comparable petrol vehicle, and because regen does most day-to-day braking, corroded or seized brake hardware can hide under low pad wear. Red flag: Tyres far more worn than the odometer suggests, or a spongy, noisy brake response on the test ride.

Paperwork & transfer

Mostly the same as any used vehicle in India; the EV-specific catches are the warranty, the app account and the subsidy history.

• Verify the RC, chassis and motor numbers match, and file the ownership transfer at the RTO promptly Standard used-vehicle hygiene: the registration certificate must match the vehicle, and the transfer protects both sides from future liability. Red flag: RC details that do not match the vehicle, a pending hypothecation the seller cannot close, or pressure to run on the old owner's name.
• Transfer or rewrite the insurance in your name immediately, and re-check the IDV covers the battery Get the policy endorsed to you right away rather than riding on the old owner's cover, and make sure the declared value reflects the battery, the most expensive part. Red flag: A lapsed policy, or an IDV set so low a battery claim could never be made whole.
• Get the brand app and connected-vehicle account transferred to you before money changes hands On many EVs the app controls charging, location and sometimes immobilisation. Until the account transfers, the previous owner may retain remote access to your vehicle. Red flag: A seller who keeps promising to sort the app transfer later.
• Ask whether a purchase subsidy was claimed and whether any lock-in or clawback condition applies Some incentive schemes have conditions attached to the original purchase, such as minimum ownership periods. Any obligation stays with the vehicle's paper trail, so know what was claimed. Red flag: Subsidy paperwork the seller cannot produce for a nearly-new vehicle sold suspiciously quickly.

Price it honestly

• Price the same model new, with current incentives, before agreeing a used price New EV prices keep moving and purchase incentives apply to new vehicles, not used ones. A lightly-used EV at a small discount to an incentivised new one is a bad deal dressed as a bargain. Red flag: A used price within striking distance of the current new on-road price for the same or a newer variant.
• Discount for measured battery condition, not just age and kilometres Two identical-year EVs can carry very different packs. Your range test and any SoH readout are the negotiation lever; a degraded pack is a future expense you are buying. Red flag: A seller pricing purely on year and odometer while refusing any battery verification.
• Check whether the model has since had a major battery or platform update EV generations move fast. If the current version of the same model has meaningfully more real-world range or faster charging, the older generation should be priced accordingly. Red flag: An old-generation vehicle priced as if it were the current one.
