Judging battery health before you buy

The battery is most of a used EV's value, and India has no independent battery-health testing standard yet, so verification falls to you. Four routes exist today, best to worst: an official SoH readout where the brand exposes one, a range test you run yourself, the charging behaviour you observe during inspection, and the warranty status as a downside cap. Stack as many as the seller allows; walk away from a seller who allows none.

What SoH actually tells you

State of health is the pack's remaining usable capacity as a percentage of original: 90% SoH means a tenth of the capacity is gone, and your real-world range shrinks roughly in step. Degradation is normal and front-loaded, so a few percent lost in the first years is expected, not alarming (see degradation, explained). Judge any reading against two anchors: the vehicle's age, and the warranty line, since battery warranties in India typically promise around 70% retention over their term. Well above that line for its age is healthy; near it is a negotiation point; below it on a still-warrantied vehicle is the seller's warranty claim to resolve before you buy, not your expense to absorb.

Route 1: an official readout, where the brand allows it

Some brands surface battery health in the owner's app; others can pull it with a diagnostic at an authorised service centre. Access is uneven and entirely at the brand's discretion, which is the honest state of the market. If a readout exists for the model you are buying, make the sale conditional on seeing it fresh, ideally at the service centre rather than as a screenshot. A seller who discourages a service-centre visit on a vehicle they claim is healthy is telling you something.

Route 2: the range test no seller can refuse

Note the charge percentage and the trip meter, ride or drive a meaningful distance in normal conditions, then extrapolate to full-charge range. Compare the result against the model's independently tested real-world figure, not the brochure claim, which runs optimistic even when new (see real-world range vs ARAI). A healthy used pack should land within a sensible distance of the tested figure; a large shortfall is your negotiation number. This is not laboratory-grade measurement, and weather, load and speed all move it, but it is the one check that needs no cooperation from the brand and cannot be talked away.

Route 3: watch it charge

Pack and battery-management problems often show while charging rather than driving: errors, a charge that stalls short of full, or unusual heat. Plug it in during the inspection and let it climb. A seller who arrives with a full battery and resists charging in front of you has removed one of your few verification tools, so treat that as a red flag in itself.

Route 4: the warranty as your downside cap

A transferable battery warranty converts the worst-case outcome from a pack replacement into a warranty claim. That is why written warranty-transfer status is a battery check, not a paperwork formality: some warranties are first-owner-only, and the difference between a warrantied and unwarrantied pack of the same age is worth real money. Get the status for the specific vehicle in writing from the brand or dealer, not the seller's memory.

Turning what you find into a price

Discount for measured condition, not just age and kilometres: two identical-year EVs can carry very different packs. A verified healthy pack justifies a strong price; measured degradation is a future expense you are buying and should come off the price today; and an unverifiable pack should be priced as if degraded, because you are carrying the risk.
