How long does it take to charge an EV in India?

Reviewed by the EVz Editorial Team · July 2026 · how we verify

An electric scooter in India takes an average of 5 hours for a full charge on the AC charger in the box. Electric-car charging times look far shorter, but that is because they are usually quoted as a 10-80% DC fast charge at a public station, not a home charge - so the two are not comparable. Figures below are per segment, labelled by charging basis, from official sources as of July 2026.

6.6 h Car DC fast charge 10-80%, not home AC

Charging times are manufacturer/brochure figures, not EVz road tests. Two-wheeler and e-cycle times are a full charge on the bundled AC charger; most car times are a 10-80% DC fast charge at a public station - do not compare the two directly. Actual time varies with charger power, battery state and temperature.

Why car and scooter charge times are not comparable

A scooter or e-cycle number is a full charge on the AC charger that ships in the box - a home socket, several hours. Most car numbers are a 10-80% top-up on a public DC fast charger, which is a different job entirely. Put a car on a home AC wallbox and it takes longer than a scooter, not less. So "cars charge faster" is a measurement artefact, not reality. For what this means if you cannot charge at home, see can I own an EV without home charging.

How we source it

Charging times are manufacturer/brochure figures from official sources - not EVz road tests. We label each segment's charging basis (AC full charge vs DC 10-80%) so the numbers are never mistaken for a like-for-like comparison.

Frequently asked questions

How long does it take to charge an electric scooter in India?

Across the 40 electric scooters EVz tracks, a full charge on the bundled AC home charger averages 5 hours. The quickest is the BGauss RUV 350i EX at 2.35 hours; the slowest is the Ather 450S 2.9 kWh at 8.6 hours.

How long does it take to charge an electric car in India?

Electric-car charging times EVz tracks average 6.6 hours - but note these are mostly DC fast-charge figures (10-80% at a public fast charger), not a full home AC charge, which takes several hours longer. Always check whether a quoted time is AC or DC.

Why are electric car charge times so much shorter than scooters?

Because they measure different things. Scooter and e-cycle times are a full charge on the AC charger that comes in the box (a home socket). Most car figures are a 10-80% top-up at a public DC fast charger. A car on a home AC wallbox actually takes longer than a scooter, not less - so the two are not comparable head to head.

How current is this data?
