EV on-road price by state: what tax and subsidy actually change
Reviewed by the EVz Editorial Team · July 2026 · how we verify
Where you register an EV can swing its on-road price by ₹1,97,600 on the same car. Most of India still waives EV road tax and registration in full - Delhi, Mumbai, Pune, Hyderabad, Chennai in our six-city set - but Karnataka now levies a one-time lifetime tax on electric cars (5-10% by price band, since April 2026), the first big state to walk back a full EV waiver. Every figure below is computed from each state's own policy, as of July 2026, using a representative Hyundai Creta Electric Excellence LR HC Knight DT (51.4 kWh, top) and Bounce Infinity E1.
